We can stabilize slopes using a variety of solutions, including anchors. When performing an analysis, geotechnical engineers often follow the traditional two-dimensional (2D), Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM). In order to help the user to design a reinforced slope, back-analysis is provided for Slope Stability 2D/3D.
Subsequently, in back analysis, the user specifies a required Factor of Safety and PLAXIS LE will calculate the critical slip surface corresponding to this FOS. It will also calculate the required maximum horizontal support, regarding the passive and active force to achieve certain stabilization condition.
We can use a simple example in 2D and 3D to prove the concept of back-analysis. We will apply the back-analysis feature and update the corresponding analysis with an end-anchored support related to the maximum horizontal force required. The user can use the magnitude of the calculated support force from Back Analysis to estimate the spacing and capacity of a support system. The slip surface determined from the back analysis can be used to estimate the support length.
The different resources available in the solution can help users identify the critical zones for maximizing the design of the project. Check the videos to learn more about the Back-analysis tool:
