Create road designs with construction-driven engineering and analysis

OpenRoads Designer is an extremely versatile civil design application that is used for all types and sizes of civil projects around the world. The application addresses a wide variety of complex tasks such as interchange design, roundabout design, earthworks, surveying, sanitary and stormwater network design, subsurface utilities, and production of construction staking reports. Traditional 2D methods are manual and tedious, full of communication and data gaps, leaving you frustrated, exhausted, and with a project that costs you accuracy, time, and money. From survey through plan production and construction documentation, OpenRoads Designer is the one application you need to meet project requirements on time, every time, regardless of change.

Data and design integration

OpenRoads makes collaborating on 2D and 3D models easier and more efficient than ever. From team-level, work-in-progress collaboration to project-level, multidiscipline coordination, project managers, reviewers, site workers, and inspectors can view designs, perform virtual walkthroughs, query model information, and analyze embedded property data. You can automate the production of high-quality drawings, including multidiscipline documentation sets, which are consistent across the entire project. Get a live view of the project in sheet orientation. As the design changes, so will the sheets. Make edits directly in the design model and the application will update the sheets.

OpenRoads Designer - Perform Design-Time Analysis

Detailed road design

OpenRoads is all you need for geometrics, survey, drainage, utilities, quantity takeoff, cut/fill, site grading, lane configurations, and mobility. Ensure visibility into overall project performance with design-time analytics to achieve optimized design outcomes for a wide variety of analysis such as drainage, terrain, safety, grading, site visibility, and more. Roadway designers and engineers require software that seamlessly collaborates across disciplines, addresses growing industry demands, and includes automation to remove tedious manual work. Whether you need to produce traditional 2D deliverables, advance to 3D modeling, support digital transformation, or all the above, OpenRoads is the choice for road design.

2D, 3D, and beyond

Even as the transportation industry is moving towards the creation of 3D models, the need for a variety of deliverables continues to be part of the project workflow. How much does OpenRoads Designer cost?

A practitioner license of OpenRoads Designer costs $6,057 USD. Prices vary per region. While there are various types of licensing available, a common choice is the 12-month practitioner license offered through Virtuosity, Bentley’s eCommerce store. When you purchase through Virtuosity, you get a Virtuoso Subscription. This means you get the software and “Keys” (tokens) to redeem for customizable training, mentoring, and consulting services.

Does OpenRoads Designer support BIM requirements?

Yes, OpenRoads Designer addresses BIM Level 1 and beyond with great use of the 3D model facilitating advancement into BIM Level 2 and beyond. The application supports interoperability and object modeling with 2D and 3D modeling that produces linear, surfaces, and 3D mesh artifacts directly and stores in the file providing real-time visualization that surpasses other civil design tools in the market. You are assured of open information mobility via the 3D model collaboration and i-models allowing the sharing of data from multiple vendors, disciplines, and organizations.

OpenRoads Designer also provide greater scalability and level of detail in the design stage to support construction. The application also provides a comprehensive geometric rule engine to address model update requirements and delivers design intent and automatically updates the model to encapsulate change.

Can I integrate data from other projects into my road design?

OpenRoads Designer provides an open modeling environment to ensure you data integration across disciplines to improve collaboration and ensure all users are working from the latest model in all phases of the design. Working in the live model reduces risk by using the data interactively and working among site, rail, road, bridge, drainage, subsurface utilities, geotechnical, and other design teams to help identify conflicts earlier in the process and eliminate construction errors and delays.

Does OpenRoads Designer produce both 3D models and 2D PDF or paper drawings to support project deliverables?

Yes, OpenRoads Designer is built to help manage change within the design and reflects all edits and updates to ensure both 2D and 3D high-quality construction deliverables. You can produce cross-sections, plans, profiles, plan sheets, and more from the 3D model. The model is dynamically linked to the production of plan sheets, so you can annotate plans directly in the model and ensure all project standards are reflected in deliverables.  You can easily segregate, extract, and package specified data to contractors while ensuring standards are enforced via workspaces and worksets. The application also outputs standard formats for Trimble, Topcon, and Leica for machine-controlled grading and machine guidance.

Do I need a separate design package to model subsurface utilities networks?

No, OpenRoads Designer includes subsurface design and analysis capabilities for up to 100 inlets to ensure you can design, model, and analyze hydraulic networks and integrate the design into your civil infrastructure project.

Do I need a 3rd party visualization software to create animations or real-time renderings?

No, OpenRoads Designer is a 3D modeling application that helps you experience designs in real time and enables you to move through the 3D site model and visually inspect the design for any deficiencies or physical conflicts. You can fully view site features in 3D QA to check grading issues, utility conflicts, and site performance. The software fully integrates with Bentley LumenRT to create models and high-impact visuals and animations to easily communicate the design to stakeholders and clients for project approval.

What is GEOPAK software?

GEOPAK is a civil design software previously sold by Bentley that is now integrated into OpenRoads Designer. OpenRoads Designer supersedes all capabilities previously delivered through InRoads, GEOPAK, MX, and PowerCivil. OpenRoads Designer performs detailed design for surveying, drainage, subsurface utilities, and roadways with construction-driven engineering and analysis.

What is MX design?

MX design is a civil design software previously sold by Bentley that is now integrated into OpenRoads. OpenRoads Designer supersedes all capabilities previously delivered through InRoads, GEOPAK, MX, and PowerCivil.

Which software is used for highway design?

Virtuosity’s OpenRoads Designer is a roadway design software that provides a comprehensive modeling environment to support design highway designs from concept through construction.
