Frequently Asked Questions

What is CivilStorm?

CivilStorm is a fully dynamic, multi-platform, hydraulic modeling solution developed for the analysis of complex stormwater systems.

Can you perform different scenarios and compare them in CivilStorm?

Using the Scenario Management Center in CivilStorm, you have full control to configure, run, evaluate, visualize, and compare an unlimited number of scenarios within a single file. You can easily make decisions by comparing alternative designs or proposed rehabilitation methods for a variety of system conditions (including pre- and post-development).

Are there built-in stormwater hydrology options available in CivilStorm?

You can model runoff flows using a choice of hydrograph methods, including RTK, SCS, Modified Rational, EPA -SWMM, or user-defined generic unit hydrographs. You can load models with runoff from the precipitation using the built-in rainfall distributions, or user defined rainfall events.

Can you model low impact development?

Yes, in CivilStorm, you can model the effect that low impact development controls have in retaining runoff before it enters the stormwater system.

How do you use multiple solvers in CivilStorm?

You can easily switch among multiple solvers, according to the type of system they are analyzing. To solve the Saint Venant equations, you can choose between CivilStorm’s explicit EPA SWMM solver and the implicit dynamic wave engine. These two dynamic engines account for storage effects within structures and quantify flooding should it occur. You can also use the SWMM water quality features to comply with water quality regulations. With the rational/gradually varied flow solver, peak flows in the storm sewer system are calculated using the rational method. Use this solver to analyze peak flow conditions, or to automatically design storm sewers.

How much is OpenFlows CivilStorm?

A practitioner license of OpenFlows CivilStorm costs $2,926 – $7,615 USD depending on the links desired. Prices also vary per region. While there are various types of licensing available, a common choice is the 12-month practitioner license offered through Virtuosity, Bentley’s eCommerce store. When you purchase through Virtuosity, you get a Virtuoso Subscription. This means you get the software and “Keys” (tokens) to redeem for customizable training, mentoring, and consulting services.

System Requirements

Refer to the ‘Installation Requirements’ section of CivilStorm’s ReadMe file.

Platform pre-requirements

CivilStorm runs without platform restrictions as a stand-alone application. It can also run from within AutoCAD and MicroStation. The requirements are also available in CivilStorm’s ReadMe file.
